Method

We track honto-ni arigato by measuring daily Japanese-language mentions of 本当にありがとう: present-tense thanks like 本当にありがとう, 本当にありがとうございます, and 本当に有難う, and past-tense thanks like 本当にありがとうございました and 本当に有難うございました. We compare those honto-ni thank-yous against regular ありがとう and 有難う posts, including past-tense forms, so the honto-ni arigato share shows how often people add “really” to their public thanks. We count the honto-ni arigatos every day. The color of the rotating 39 shows the day's mix: present-tense thank-yous are blue, past-tense thank-yous are red, and the purple is the specific blend produced by that day's counts.
